Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. HSI is responsible for investigating a wide range of domestic and international activities arising from the illegal movement of people and goods into, within, and out of the United States.

HSI Criminal Investigator Special Agent Pre-Hire Assessments is conducted in 2 phases:
HSI PHASE 1 is taken on line and requires 1-hour and 40-minutes
Test-takers are asked to write a short essay (at least 100 words) in response to a broad, non-job-related question. Essays are evaluated on organization, clarity, grammar, and completeness of response.
Situational Judgment Test (SJT) presents applicants with realistic, job-related scenarios, and several potential courses of action for each. Serious candidates need to get a good study guide to learn how to master these situations.
Questions on the HSI Special Agent Phase 2 Exam
HSI PHASE 2 is conducted at testing centers and requires 3-hours to complete. This set of tests includes:
Writing Skills Test (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.)
Logical Reasoning (advanced)
Candidate Experience Record (CER)
Is there a Study Guide or Practice Test for the HSI Exam?
You can find a HSI Test Preparation Guide on the HSI web site that contains lots of details about the hiring process and logistics. All applicants are encourage to become familiar with this guide.
While the guide gives you a couple of examples of the types of questions you will encounter on the written exam, it doesn’t go into detail to teach you how to score high on the HSI exam. There are no real practice questions to prepare you for the real thing.
